Canasta is part of the rummy family of card games and is believed to be a variant of 500 Rum. While there are many variations for different numbers of players, it is most commonly played by four players in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards. The goal is to make melds of seven cards of the same rank and "go out" by playing all cards in your hand.

Canasta uses two complete decks of 52 playing cards (French Deck) along with four Jokers. All Jokers and Twos are wild cards.

The initial dealer in Canasta is chosen by any common method, as there is no privilege or advantage to being the dealer. The dealer shuffles the deck, the player to the dealer's right cuts, and the dealer deals two hands of 11 cards to each player. The remaining cards are left in a stack in the center of the table.

The player to the dealer's left takes the first turn, and play proceeds clockwise. A turn begins by either drawing the first card from the stock into your hand or picking up the entire discard pile. If the card drawn from the stock is a red three, it must be played immediately, and another card is drawn.

A player "goes out" when they have no cards left after a meld or discard. However, a player cannot go out unless they have at least one canasta.

In Canasta, a meld consisting of seven or more cards, including at least four natural cards (known as a "base"), is called a canasta. The first team to reach a total of 5,000 points wins the game.
